WFAH does not advise most grain-free foods for dogs and cats. Cardiologists noted alarming cardiac conditions in dogs fed grain- free diets. Sudden deaths have been documented and grain-free diets were implicated. These diets result in low levels of taurine and carnitine. These two amino acids are essential to heart health. In 2019, FDA followed up on the veterinary cardiologists concerns and likewise, advised that dogs not be fed certain grain-free foods.

Cats are obligate carnivores and require high levels of protein in canned food. Canned food most-closely approximates the primary food consumed by cats-mice. Cats thrive when eating a food- source with 80% water content. That's why canned food is so important. Please call us to discuss optimal feeding recommendations for your cat. There, too, grain-free is not recommended.

Achieving optimal nutritional standards for dogs and cats will enable them to live longer with less veterinary intervention. We really enjoy discussing how to best feed your pet.
